In this Adobe Photoshop CS6 tutorial, I'll be demonstrating some quick-tips on how to achieve a transparent glass texture effect in minutes using only layer styles. You can either follow me through this tutorial, or simply download the free PSD (attachment icon above) and observe it. We're cool either way. Start by finding an image; any image, and open it up in Photoshop (we're using CS6, but any version should be fine). Let's get started, shall we?
Draw a shape with the Rounded Rectangle Tool from the left menu, and turn off the Stroke from the top menu. Make sure that the shape is white, and the Blending Mode has been switched to Soft Light. Your shape should now be blended into the background image, but still (faintly) visible.
Now, navigate to Layer » Layer Style and lets begin to experiment with lighting effects. First we need Bevel & Emboss with 250px Size, 16px Soften, 30 Degree Angle/Altitude, Global Light, 75% Opacity on Soft Light Highlight Mode (white), and 10% Opacity on Shadow Mode (black). Then, we need 25% Opacity on a white Inner Glow with 15px Size. The Colour Overlay should be white with 10% Opacity, and finally, the Drop Shadow should have 50% Opacity, 3px Distance, 10% Spread, 9px Size, and the same lighting effects and the Bevel & Emboss. That's right, it's done!
