Create glowing neon text effects in Photoshop with a few simple steps, or a series of blending options and overlays. Many ways exist to make ordinary text appear to be authentic-looking neon. Experiment with gradients and colors to achieve different, creative text styles for use in signs, logos, invitations or anywhere else you need a trendy look full of color and excitement.
Simple Neon Text Effect
Create the look of a dramatic blue neon sign in Photoshop. The trick of making text look like neon is to start with a skinny font, not a thick one, such as "Eras Light ITC." Using white text on a black background, make a layer copy and add a centered blue stroke in "Layer Styles." Give it a blue "Outer Glow" too, in the "Screen" blend mode, "Softer" technique. Back on your original text layer, add a light blue "Color Overlay" in "Layer Styles" and give it a "Gaussian Blur." Put the original layer on top; you now have a neon text effect that can make an impressive sign or logo.
Rainbow Neon Text Effect
Create neon text in rainbow colors for a festive party look, or a professional graphic treatment. Again, start with a very thin font and type your message in white on a dark background. Use the Photoshop "Gradient Overlay" named "Transparent Rainbow" in "Layer Styles" to color letters in your text different colors of the rainbow. The colorful, glowing effect is enhanced by a "Gaussian Blur" on each layer.
Half and Half Neon Text Effect
The half and half neon look uses the Photoshop gradient overlay called Chrome in Layer Styles. The top half of your text will be sky blue, and the bottom half copper-colored, or you can reverse the effect. The half and half look will mimic a horizon line. Make it glow like neon when you add the Transparent Rainbow gradient. Give the duplicate text layer a Gaussian Blur, an Outer Glow, and a Stroke. With ideas from online tutorials, you can experiment with the many gradient overlays in Photoshop to invent your own neon text effects.
