Paint Shop Blog Painting Tips from the Pros

If you are looking for a good way to freshen up the interior of your home, there are probably few methods that can top a fresh coat of paint. The trouble with this, as many would-be do-it-yourselfers will testify, is that what often starts off with the greatest of intentions often ends up a nightmare of unexpected colors, paint splatters, and swath upon swath of paint coats in an effort to cover mistakes. Fortunately, it doesnt have to be this way. The Experts at Lowes and Valley House Painters in Phoenix, AZ have added some great tips to help you on your way.  By heeding the tips below you will not only end up with some beautiful walls, but you will be entitled to everything a job well done allows you.

1. Prep your surface. Paint will cover a lot of things, but there are also things that no amount of paint will cover. In these cases, only good prep work will do. Understandably, this isnt much fun to do, but its an important part of making what you cover it with look good, and as a result it will make your painting effort top notch. Prepping the surfaces to be painted means scraping, patching, sanding, and filling every crack, hole, and imperfection.
2. Tint your primer. Admittedly, tinting your primer is one more job that most people would love to avoid. The trouble with this is that, especially with some surfaces, its unavoidable. Take for example painting over drywall or a dark color. Tinting your primer prevents stains from bleeding through. It also allows for one-coat coverage. Most important of all, however is that it helps the paint adhere to the surface.
3. Cover up. It doesnt matter how good or careful you are in your painting, spills and drips do happen. For this reason you should always use a dropcloth to cover the floors, carpeted or uncarpeted. And when it comes time to choose between canvas or plastic, it usually pays big dividends if you opt for canvas. Plastic might be cheaper, but canvas is easier to keep down to avoid tripping over. It also helps in absorbing spilled paint.

5. Opt for a grid, not a tray. Paint trays are messy and difficult to use. Instead, use a paint grid to work with your paint. Not only do they fasten to your bucket, but they stay where you put them and make your paint easier to work with. To use it, all you need to do is to dip your roller into the paint, run it on the grid to eliminate the excess paint, then use the roller. When the job is done, just replace the top of the buckpainting gridet over the grid and youre ready for the next day of work.
6. Paint. Another problem that many people encounter when they paint is while they actually do the job of painting. When you paint, use long, even strokes from top to bottom. Never paint horizontally. Use painters tape and paper to cover anything you dont want to get hit with paint. A common problem that is often encountered while painting is overlaps on the edges. To avoid this problem, keep a wet edge, which is making sure that you paint the next coat while the first is still wet. If you dont you will end up with overlap that is difficult to cover.
7. Storing overnight. When your job is done, at least for the day, storing your tools shouldnt be the hit and miss project that most people anticipate. Unfortunately, most people dont give much thought to how they plan to store their brushes and other materials. For paint, simply put the lids on the cans and tap them closed with a hammer. For brushes and rollers, wipe the excess paint off of them, then place them in plastic food bags. Its even a good idea to double-up on the bags to make them air tight as much as possible. Then put them in the refrigerator to keep them fresh. The next day, take them out and allow them to stand for a few minutes. They will be fresh and supple for use.
Follow these tips and you will soon see nothing but professional results, whether youre an amateur or not.
