In this tutorial I will show you a very simple technique to remove objects from an image
[tweetmeme]This is a common task using Photoshop in works for clients. They give you their source image and you must clean it. This require of patience and analyzing the image you will work with. In this tutorial I will show you a very simple technique to do it.
Step 1 use of the clone tool
The clone tool allows you to select a part of the image and then paint with that selection. The selection can be painted into the existing image or into a new image
a) Duplicate the layer
b) Select the clone tool
c) Select an area close to section you want to remove. Use alt + click to select the source area
d) Paint with the clone tool the parts you want to remove. Use a soft brush. You will have to vary the brush size depending on the resolution of your picture.
e) Continue painting all the areas that uses the same background, in this example the grass
Step 2 Complicated or busy areas
When you find a busy area like these plants, you need to be very careful selecting your source.
As you can see Im selecting the upper part of the plant and painting in the same angle as the plants.
You need to be careful to select your source pixels according to every different area so it looks natural.
Step 3 Patch tool
There will be areas so complicated that you simply cannot use the clone tool, for these cases we got the patch tool.
a) Select the patch tool
b) With the patch tool create a mask around the area you want to remove
c) Drag the mask to the area you want to clone.
Sometimes the result is not too precise, but you can fine adjust it with the clone tool
Here are some more areas where I used the Patch tool
Step 3 Straight line
The clone tool can be very useful with straight lines like in a window.
a) Select your source pixels, be very careful to select exactly in the middle of the line.
b) When you start painting with the clone tool, start painting exactly in the same line of the pixels you selected, that way the line will continue.
Step 4 Painted areas
For some areas, like a wall or a window you simply can select the original color, create a mask for the specific area and paint it in a new layer.
After you are done with the removing you can start correcting the colors.
Never correct the colors first.
Thats it; it is basically a work of patience and looking for details.
