[Editors Note: this tutorial requires a layer mask add-on for Elements, such as Grants Tools; check the comments below the article for an alternative method using adjustment layer masks.]
1. Open your first image and add some canvas to it Image>Canvas size try maybe doubling the width or a bit less and click relative. That means you just need to add the extra width. Then anchor it to the right hand side
2. Now create a new layer above that and add your second image but make sure that they have a reasonable overlap
3. Then add a mask to the top layer (Use Mask Layers from Grants Tools) and your layers palette will now look like this.
4. Next reset your foreground colour to Black. Select the gradient tool, Linear Gradient, Foreground to Transparent and draw the gradient tool across your image like this.
5. Use the red line as a guide to where to start and finish. You may need to try it a few times to get the right effect but it should give you something like this
6. Your layers should look like this.
