Hi, I'm Chris Davis for About.com. Before you start a project in Photoshop CS6, you need to know how to set one up.
Opening a New Photoshop Project
To begin a new project in CS6, go to the top menu and select File, New. A pop up window will appear. Fill out the name. Next you have some choices to make. You could proceed with Photoshop's default settings: width 7 inches, height 5 inches, resolution 72, RGB color mode with a white background. However, you can also make some adjustments.
Using Presets in Photoshop
If you know what your final output will be, then you can select from a variety of presets. The Photo preset will give you many popular photo sizes to work with, while the Web preset, Mobile preset and Video preset will provide you with appropriate options for their perspective mediums.
You can also customize any option to your needs. Be aware that the higher the resolution and physical size, the larger the file will be. This calculation is displayed on the right.
Setting Background
One other unique setting is the Background Contents. You have the option of white, background color which is set within Photoshop, or transparent. Again, select the setting that fits your project.
Once you have everything the way you want it, you do have the option to save it as preset. This is helpful if you plan on making multiple images with the same settings. Simply click Save Preset, type in a name and click OK. Click OK again and you can begin your work. When you need to reload the preset, just go to File, New and select the preset.
