A professional dye job will last months, so experiment with your hair color virtually before you book a salon appointment. Find a self-portrait and digitally turn your brunette hair blond in Photoshop. Play with shades until you like the look, then print the photo to show your hair stylist. Your perfect hair color is just a few mouse-clicks away.

    • 1

Open a photograph in Photoshop. Click Layer>Duplicate Image. Close your original photo.

    • 2

Press the Control and J keys simultaneously. This copies the background layer. Name the new layer "copy."

    • 3

Select the hair to recolor. Click the Pen tool on the tool palette. Click along the hair in your photograph. Once all the hair is outlined, right-click and choose Make Selection from the pop-up menu.

    • 4

Hold down the Control, Alt and D keys simultaneously to feather the selection. Input a feathering value of two pixels.

    • 5

Right-click on the hair and click Select Inverse. Press the Delete key to remove everything but the hair.

    • 6

Press the Control and L keys to bring up the Levels menu. Click and drag the midtone and white level sliders to the left. Experiment until satisfied with the shade.

    • 7

Select the Sponge tool from the tool palette. Change the Mode to Desaturate and slide the Flow to 20 percent. Click on any over-saturated hair.

    • 8

Select Image>Adjustments>Variations. Adjust the shadows, midtones and highlights by clicking More/Less Yellow and Lighter until satisfied.

    • 9

Manipulate the hair layer blending mode and opacity if desired. Save the completed photograph in .jpg format to merge the layers.
