How to Use Quick Mask Mode - Free Photoshop CC Tutorials

Hello guys I am Vaibhav and today I am going to show you how to use Quick Mask in Photoshop to select objects. Last time I discussed about Creating a Simple Logo Using Photoshop which is a extremely important tutorial if you are a beginner in the field graphics designing. For this tutorial basically what I am going to do is use Quick Mask Tool and then I will brush over the area which I want to select. After that I will disable the Quick Mask Tool. Once I disable the Quick Mask Tool, my selection with marching ants would automatically appear.

STEP 1

The very first thing that you need to do is grab Brush Tool from the tool panel. You can also press Shift+B again and again until it comes.

1

Now increase the hardness to 90% and set the brush size as per your convenience. The image on which I am working on pretty much big so it is convenient for me to set my brush size as high as 226 pixels. However this size might not be suitable for you if you are working on smaller images.

2

STEP 2

Now enable the Quick Mask Mode by clicking on the Edit in Quick Mask Mode in the tool panel. You can also press Q to enable Quick Mask Mode.

3

STEP 3

Now brushing on the area which you want to select. In the below image I am going to select the old house so I am going to brush over the old house. As you are in quick mask mode so wherever you brush, the area will be highlighted with red color.

4

Once you are done your image should look like this.

5

STEP 4

Often you will encounter with a situation in which you have brushed over an area which was not supposed to be brushed. In short you have brushed over an unwanted area. You can simply undo it by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Z/Cmd+Opt+Z but I would not recommend that. Apart from that you can use Eraser Tool. Like in the image shown below, I accidently brushed over the sky which is encircled with yellow color.

6

To remove that part I can use Eraser Tool. Grab the Eraser Tool from the tool panel or you can activate it by pressing Shift+E again and again until it comes. Now erase the unwanted area.

I think now it is looking fine.

7

STEP 5

Now leave the Quick Mask Mode by pressing Q or by clicking on the same icon which we used to activate Quick Mask Mode. Once you leave the Quick Mask Mode, you need to invert the selection by pressing Ctrl+Shift+I/Cmd+Shift+I and theres your selection.

8

STEP 6

Now you can use Refine Edge Tool to improve your selection.Go to Select>Refine Edge Tool or you can press Ctrl+Alt+R/Cmd+Opt+R to open the Refine Edge Tool Box. Tweak some settings and your selection will get better. In fact I have written a whole tutorial on Refine Edge Tool which might be beneficial to you.

9

Now I think my selection in much better than the previous one.

10

We are done here.

Thank You for reading this article. Hopefully well meet again in four days.
