In Photoshop Elements, the term "mask" refers to the ability to hide a section of a layer with a couple of clicks of the mouse and some creativity. Masks allow the user to seamlessly join two images, without harming the originals. Masks remove part of a layer to show the background beneath. After you apply a mask, the original image looks very different from the final product.

      Open a file by clicking "File," then "Open." Choose the file. Click "Open."

      Choose and click the layer for the mask

    • 3

      Click the paintbrush tool and click the mask icon.

      Erase or alter the image with the paint tool. White removes parts of the image. Painting with black over a previously removed section brings that part of the layer back.

      Hold down "Shift" and click the mask icon, when finished.
